When Life Gets in the Way

This past weekend was designated "Write your A$$ Off Weekend" courtesy of Editorial Ass. I had great plans for the motivation and opportunity, a mini-outline of what I wanted to commit to paper and a block of time in which to achieve all this. Except for it didn't work out quite like I'd planned.

On Friday morning, my youngest son, the Snugglebunny, came down with a vicious sore throat that morphed into a stuffy head and runny nose. Poor thing suffered for the entire weekend. Those of you who're parents know that focusing on yourself and garnering that elusive solitude needed to write is nigh on impossible if there is a sick kid sniffling nearby all the livelong day. So, between preparing soup, riding herd on the oldest son's computer time and indulging the patient in a Harry Potter moviethon, I managed to get absolutely no new words written.

That's not to say that I didn't get ANYTHING of an authorial nature accomplished. I managed some research on an aspect of a Celtic deity who's important to my current heroine and also found a Gaulish/Brythonic goddess that shares traits with the one whose life I'm stirring into a roux. I'm not making it an exact retelling of any of the legends but I significantly borrow bits and pieces where it suits me. Finally, I edited about 10,000 words of a completed manuscript that needs polishing.

So, no shiny new words, but I did get the old ones dusted off, tighened up and looking a bit more presentable.

Oh, Pamala, I've had this experience so many times...and it's never a good one. I'm sorry your son was sick--that's just terribly hard on every level--but good for you still managing to get something productive done. Hope this proves to be a much better week! xo

Thanks Marilyn! Once everyone is back to their regular routine I think my time to write will come about. See you soon, I hope.

How about making the upcoming weekend you write your ass off time? Don't forget to warn everyone ahead of time that they are on their own.

You know, I had a great idea for a business this weekend: a writing center, just for writers. How does this differ from a cafe or library or home office, I hear you ask. It's different because it takes you out of those places and only exposes you to other writers. No one else is allowed... no college students cramming for finals, no readers looking for a quiet corner... just writing going on and only writing. People would have to pay for membership fee, of course, but the coffee would be free. And the best part... no husband, partners, children or phones allowed!

Thanks for the suggestion, Teresa. Sometimes I can slip off to the library and sequester myself into a corner and write.

Your writers cafe idea sounds great! Add some chocolate to the menu and sign me up!

Sorry to hear Snugglebunny was sick-hope he's feeling better. Maybe his cold was just the universe's way of telling you that you needed to be editing and researching this past weekend, not writing. I bet your a$$ will be written off soon enough!

Thanks Pamela! The SB is feeling better--went to school today and came home for a stint with the snow shovel ;-).

I've decided that your way of thinking is the correct way--research and editing are both vital to the process. I'll make the time to get the words down though.

See you in April (so excited!!!)

Hi Pamala, sorry I don't check in regularly. Glad to hear your boy is feeling better. I remember those days. Good for you for still getting mental work done! Hope you find that block of time soon. cheers, N

Hey Nancy!
No need to apologize because I know what's keeping your attention these days. You check in plenty, so no worry on that account, okay? Thanks for stopping by. See you soon.

*hugs*

Well at least there wasn't a tennis tournament on.

Hmm.... Dorothy are you SURE there wasn't a tennis tournament on? I think Pattaya and the Open de Gaz were both being played and on live streaming somewhere. You know me, if it's being played and videotaped, then I'll be watching, lol.

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Pamela
Now I've got to fit it into my writing schedule and watch it. I don't do tape delay. I bought Serena's pave ring that she wears when she plays and a really awesome black knit sweater with pearl buttons, also from her collection. I'll be wearing them at Spring Fling
