Imagine the difference if those elements had been removed--much less impactful, I think. I love the way Andrew Stanton crafts movies, maybe especially John Carter, because of the way he infuses the characters and the plot with genuine emotion.

I appreciate you stopping by and especially for leaving a comment.Pamala Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12823051545160002135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175293359124379112.post-83206240244723331132014-06-19T10:19:01.962-07:002014-06-19T10:19:01.962-07:00I recently saw a TED talk with Pixar writer Andrew...I recently saw a TED talk with Pixar writer Andrew Stanton. Apparently, one of the early "rules" of Pixar's storytelling was "no love stories".

But Pixar's movies contain some of the most touching love stories on film. Carl and Ellie. Mr Incredible and Elastigirl. WALL-E and Eve. The romances may not be central but they're right there, jerking all our tears, and they're so essential to character motivation that the stories just wouldn't be possible without them.Fionahttp://fionahurley.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175293359124379112.post-83529105987733596992014-05-26T12:48:18.311-07:002014-05-26T12:48:18.311-07:00Hi Natalie! I too hope that the movie draws enough of an audience so that quality films like it can be made.

I saw your comment on SBTB about the younger Ashford son and I agree with you mostly. He did want to marry her but I think that the film tried to show the contrast between the two suitors: Davinier, who loved Belle regardless of her status/money and Oliver Ashford who did appear to enjoy her company/want to marry her but was too malleable when it came to his mother's and brother's wishes. Imagine Belle's life in the household if she had indeed married him.

So, I appreciated Mr. Ashford's open-mindedness because who knows, maybe he would've moved them away and NEVER seen his family again, but who wants to walk into a situation like that, where your mother in law only gave her permission because you had a dowry and her son needed one?

Again, thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll tell me about the Biblical fiction you enjoy. I'm a big fan of The Red Tent, Ann Rice's Christ the Lord books and my all time favorite is Dear and Glorious Physician by Taylor Caldwell.Pamala Knighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12823051545160002135noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175293359124379112.post-87312388863747245302014-05-25T19:35:14.564-07:002014-05-25T19:35:14.564-07:00I just watched Belle today and loved it -- the rom...I just watched Belle today and loved it -- the romance in it is an integral part of the strength of the story: that a mixed-race woman at that time could have any say about the shape of her life, that she could be the heroine of a love story, was radical. I really hope the movie finds an audience to get film studios to keep making movies like this.Natalie Harthttp://nataliehart.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8175293359124379112.post-23558921447774628172014-05-22T17:43:58.934-07:002014-05-22T17:43:58.934-07:00Jaye, THANK YOU for stopping by and commenting on ...Jaye, THANK YOU for stopping by and commenting on my rant. I hope you go see the film (email me if you want to try to arrange a joint viewing) and think you'll love it too :)

The denigration associated with romance and women is so prevalent in mainstream media that it's not even funny.
